                                         LETS GET STARTED!!

*History of Earth Day.Image

Organized by Gaylord Nelson, a Senator from Wisconsin who noticed that serious concern about environmental degradation were obvious everywhere except the halls of power, the first Earth Day drew instant attention from a wide range of citizens across the country. With the help of John Gardner and Denis Hayes, Nelson helped organize a nationwide grassroots celebration on April 22, 1970, that eventually included more than 20 million people.

Even after 35 years, Earth Day still remains a watershed event in the environmental movement. Since its inception, interest and participation in Earth Day has only increased and spread around the world, with activities, celebrations, and events growing steadily over time and millions of concerned citizens taking part. It is now recognized as the largest non-religious holiday in the world.

ImageAlmost three decades ago, Keep America Beautiful created a powerful visual image
to dramatize how litter and other forms of environmental pollution were hurting America,
and how litter was every individual's responsibility. Keep America Beautiful's landmark
public service ad, which featured the now-famous face and tear of the actor Iron Eyes Cody,
first aired on Earth Day 1971. It was titled “People Start Pollution, People Can Stop It,”
and it went on to become one of the most successful and memorable campaigns in advertising history.
This public service ad—which became widely known as the “Crying Indian”—and the several versions
that followed are credited with helping to fuel the fledgling environmental movement in this country.
Keep America Beautiful's newest PSA, titled “Back By Popular Neglect,” first aired on April 21/Earth Day 1998.
It recalls the famous face and tear of Iron Eyes Cody, and delivers a strong message about litter prevention
and individual responsibility. It was adapted to include information about the 1999 Great American Cleanup™.

ImageCreated in 1944, the Smokey Bear campaign is the longest running public service campaign in US History.
Smokey's forest fire prevention message remained unchanged for 50 years until April 2001, when the
Ad Council updated his message to address the increasing number of wildfires in the nation's wildlands.
As one of the world's most recognizable fictional characters, Smokey's image is protected by US Federal Law
and is administered by the USDA Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters and the Ad Council.

ImageWoodsy has been America's environmental champion since 1970, and is most recognized for his wise request,
"Give a hoot. Don't pollute." Join the USDA Forest Service in introducing children to this fanciful creature.
Woodsy is coming to you with simple, hands-on land stewardship activities--and there's so much more ahead.

*Ways we can help:Image

Image   Recycle.

Image Don't throw your trash everywhere.

Image Help keep our planet healthy.

                                EarthSavers:
Clean air -- you can't see, smell, or taste it, but you sure can't live without it! Cars, factories, and electricity make our lives easier, but they also produce gasses and chemicals that pollute the air. Polluted air is bad for people to breathe, and it can harm animals, trees, and plants. And it doesn't just blow away -- the pollution can return to earth as acid rain.

Plant a tree
Trees increase the amount of oxygen in the air, and they help clean the air by using up some of the pollutants we produce.

Turn out the lights
Many power plants make electricity by burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, and that creates air pollution. When you leave a room, turn out the lights. Less electricity will be used, less coal will get burned, and less pollution will be released into the air.

Keep a lid on the heat
Keep hot water use to a minimum -- it takes energy to heat it up. Instead of turning up the heat, put on a sweater or use an extra blanket. And ask your parents not to use the wood stove or fireplace when air pollution levels are high.

Don't crank up the cold
Air conditioners cause pollution too. They emit chemicals that can harm the ozone layer. Remember to turn yours down or off when you leave a room. And ask your parents to make sure the air conditioner's filter is cleaned regularly.

Not too far? Don't take the car!
If it's a short trip downtown or to a friend's house, don't ask for a ride. Instead, hop on your bike or walk. You'll be saving gas, and reducing air pollution from your car's exhaust.

Build a compost pile
Burning leaves produces pollutants that can harm your health. Instead, help your parents build a compost pile for leaves and other natural yard debris. An added benefit: As the compost biodegrades, it will create rich garden nutrients.

The Earth is your home. A place where you live. There is no other home you could build if this one fell apart. Please keep it clean and take care of it. It's the only one we have.
